Qantas is embarking on a transformative journey to integrate artificial intelligence into our aircraft performance and sustainability operations. As part of this strategic shift, we are seeking innovative and data-driven Aircraft Performance Engineers – Flight Data Engineer to join our team. These newly created roles will play a pivotal part in shaping the future of flight efficiency, environmental impact, and operational excellence. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Develop and deploy AI and machine learning models to optimize aircraft performance. 
• Analyse large-scale flight and operational data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement. 
• Collaborate with engineering, flight operations, and sustainability teams to implement data-driven solutions. 
• Support the integration of AI tools into existing systems and workflows. 
• Create dashboards and visualizations to communicate insights and performance metrics. 
• Contribute to Qantas’ sustainability goals by identifying carbon reduction opportunities through data science. 

About You 

You’re a curious and analytical thinker with a passion for aviation and data. You thrive in cross-functional environments and are excited by the opportunity to apply cutting-edge technology to real-world challenges. 

Skills & Experience 

• Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field. 
• Strong programming skills in Golang, Python, R, or similar. 
• Experience with, and demonstrable adoption of, emerging AI technologies. 
• Familiarity with aviation data sources (e.g., QAR, FDR, ACARS) and aircraft performance principles. 
• Ability to translate complex data into actionable insights. 
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills. 

Desirable 

• Postgraduate qualifications in Aerospace or Data Science. 
• Experience in airline operations or aviation consultancy. 
• Experience with application development on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
