From Colombia to the red centre: Juan’s journey to QantasLink

I started my career in aviation at a young age. Originally from Colombia, I spent more than 11 years working in both corporate and cabin crew roles for airlines across North and South America.

In 2012, I made the switch to finance. But a part of me always missed flying.

When I moved to Australia four and a half years ago, I decided to give aviation another go — and applied for a cabin crew role with QantasLink. To my delight, I got the job.

Since then, I’ve fallen in love with regional Australia. As someone new to this country, I feel lucky to have experienced the warmth and beauty of places many people don’t often get to see. The people you meet on QantasLink flights are often regulars — and always friendly.

I’ve had some once-in-a-lifetime flights, like being part of the trip to Winton, the birthplace of Qantas, for the town’s 150th anniversary. There was a flyover, a parade and a lot of heat — but the highlight was meeting locals who remembered different versions of the Qantas uniform. This airline means a lot to people across Australia, especially in places like Winton.

Another special moment was joining the 2023 Red Cross Christmas flight to Miles in Queensland’s Western Downs, where we delivered gifts to children affected by bushfires. It’s something I’ll never forget.
