From loading bags on the tarmac to leading one of our most crucial freight operations, Steve McAuliffe has seen almost every side of aviation.

With over 40 years in the industry, Steve is now our Manager of Unit Load Devices (ULDs) within Freight and Network Operations — a role that brings together deep operational knowledge, global experience, and a sharp focus on safety.

A four-decade career in motion

Steve began his journey with Qantas back in 1984 as a baggage handler. Since then, he’s taken on roles across the ramp, customer service, Aircraft Dispatch, Load Control and Ramp Procedures. One of his career highlights? Helping to launch new ports, including the Jetconnect operation in New Zealand.

His passion for operational excellence has taken him around the world — including working with Airbus on the A380 cargo loading system and even launching his own ground-handling consultancy while working as a flying Loadmaster for international carriers.

But Qantas was always home.

“I couldn’t stay away for long,” says Steve. “I came back to lead ULDs across the network — and haven’t looked back.”

So, what exactly is a ULD?

Unit Load Devices are the unsung heroes of aircraft logistics — used to load everything from baggage and freight to mail and even livestock like horses and elephants. Steve and his team are responsible for managing the more than 14,500 ULDs across the Qantas Group, covering 29 different container types.

“They’re one of only two removable aircraft parts — the other being galley carts — and they save hours in turnaround time,” Steve explains.

Leading the charge on safety

A strong safety culture is something Steve holds close — and his latest project is testament to that. He’s currently overseeing the Group-wide transition to fire-resistant ULDs, with nearly 50% already upgraded.

“These new containers can contain fires of up to 900°C for four hours. It’s a critical enhancement that gives our flight crews valuable time to respond if an incident occurs,” he says.

A shared responsibility

After four decades in aviation, Steve’s commitment to safety is unwavering.

“Safety is everyone’s job. It’s built on trust, communication and doing things the right way — every time. That’s the culture we have here, and it’s what keeps our teams and customers safe.”
