Keeping Qantas safe online: Meet Larissa Deylen

After more than eight years with the Qantas Group, Larissa Deylen knows just how vital cyber safety is to keeping the business moving. As a Senior Business Information Security Officer (BISO), she’s helping to shape a strong cyber culture—one that protects not just systems, but people too.

A career built on curiosity and connection

Larissa joined the Group in January 2017 and is part of the Cyber Business Protect team — the advisory arm of Cyber. Her role is all about embedding cyber awareness into every part of the business, from major transformation projects through to day-to-day ways of working.

“I’ve been in the field since before the term ‘cybersecurity’ was even used,” Larissa says. “It was called Information Security back then — which might give away my age!”

Her career began during her final year of university, when she joined a consultancy firm in her home country on the referral of the firm’s principal. Since then, she’s built an impressive career spanning countless projects and teams—both in Australia and abroad.

No two days the same

Today, Larissa partners closely with teams across Corporate and Freight, helping them consider cyber implications in everything they do. “Every business problem is different, and every day brings something new,” she says. “That’s what keeps it interesting.”

She’s also taken on opportunities beyond her day-to-day remit, including a secondment to Qantas Super during the pandemic — a time when cyber safety was more important than ever.

Putting cyber safety on the agenda

Cyber safety plays a big role in Qantas’ broader approach to safety. “It’s about protecting our people, our customers, and our reputation — not just in the air or on the ground, but online as well,” Larissa says.

She’s proud of how embedded cyber has become across the Group. “It’s discussed at Safety Committees and championed by leaders. That level of awareness shows just how far we’ve come.”
