Posted date: 11 July 2025

Job Description

  • Great opportunity to add significant value to the Qantas Group
  • Permanent opportunity based at our Mascot office (hybrid working office available)
  • Staff Travel Benefits from Day One

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will lead the research, development, and deployment of advanced forecasting and optimisation capabilities across the revenue management function. You will play a pivotal role in identifying high-impact revenue opportunities, designing sophisticated mathematical models, and guiding the integration of these models into decision-making systems that drive business performance.

In this role, you will not only apply your deep technical expertise to solve complex problems but also mentor junior team members, influence strategic direction, and collaborate cross-functionally to embed data science into core business processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the identification and evaluation of revenue improvement opportunities through the development of advanced mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of scalable, production-grade software solutions that integrate modelling capabilities into revenue management systems.
  • Provide thought leadership in the application of data science to business strategy, influencing key stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Apply structured, analytical, and creative thinking to solve complex, ambiguous problems with measurable business impact.
  • Mentor and support the development of data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.

You’ll have:

  • Post-graduate qualifications (e.g. Master's or PhD) or extensive experience in a relevant discipline, such as data science, econometrics, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or applied physics.
  • Expertise in statistical modelling, regression, time-series forecasting, and optimisation.
  • At least five years of experience applying data science techniques to solve complex business problems and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, manage priorities, and drive initiatives from concept to delivery.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience applying best-practise software engineering principles to the development of production-grade software.
  • Exposure to the model development life cycle (MLOps) including training models, adjusting models based on stakeholder feedback and continual monitoring of model performance.

Desirable skills that a stand-out candidate may have:

  • Experience applying causal inference techniques to real-world problems.
  • Experience with stakeholder management in “human in the loop” decision support systems.
