The Principal Software Engineer is a technical leadership role, highly experienced, deeply technical role. They are typically responsible for an entire technical domain, but without the line management responsibilities that an Engineering Lead usually has. They are very much leaders within the technology department, helping shape technical strategy, and reinforcing strong software engineering principles and practices.

Principal Engineers have mastered all the fundamentals of software development, from problem exploration and solution discovery, through system and code design and implementation, to the deployment and maintenance of live code in a production environment. They use this knowledge and experience to lead team members through the design, development and maintenance of digital products and services.

Principal Engineers have a deep understanding of the business and customer value their software products deliver. They typically work closely with a Product Manager and other stakeholders to maximise value and align with strategic business goals. Beyond their immediate teams, Principal Engineers contribute to the overall technical vision and effectiveness of the organisation as members of the Engineering Leadership and Delivery Leadership teams.

You’ll have:

  • 10 years’ experience in systems development and implementation
  • Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Engineering discipline preferred
  • Demonstrated ability leading technical members, while staying hands on technically
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate technical requirements effectively to the business and across multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong ability to forge and reinforce strong software engineering principles and best practices
  • In-depth skills and experience in Agile and Lean methodologies, Continuous Delivery / DevOps, Analytics / data-driven processes
  • Ownership of the whole software development lifecycle from stakeholder/end user
  • engagement, design, development to continuous delivery and DevOps
  • Expert knowledge of core technologies required for the role, such as: General purpose programming language(s) in particular python, Web-UI development languages(s) such as Javascript/Typescript, React, Database technologies, in particular PostgreSQL and Redis
  • Proven experience in automation, monitoring, testing, and quality assurance
  • Experience with Cloud computing platform(s) and tools
  • Scripting language(s) such as bash
  • Working with and administering Linux environments
  • Automated testing tools and libraries
  • Cloud computing platforms, particularly AWS
