Flying dreams to flight deck: Meet Qantas Boeing 737 Captain Mark Le Mesurier

For Qantas Boeing 737 Captain Mark Le Mesurier, becoming a pilot wasn’t just a career choice—it was a lifelong dream. He shares how it all began, the path he took to get there, and what continues to inspire him today.

Mark, did you always know you wanted to be a pilot?

I was flying solo before I even had my driver’s licence. My mum gifted me a discovery flight lesson when I was just eight years old, and I was instantly hooked. Being up in the sky felt like stepping into another world.

It was always my dream to become a Qantas pilot—and I achieved that dream 17 years ago at age 23. Getting that call was one of the best days of my life. The role has exceeded all my expectations. I get to work alongside people who share the same passion for flying, are proud to work for Qantas, and show up each day ready to deliver their best.

How did you get started in aviation?

I began my professional flying career as a flight instructor at Bankstown Airport. After a few years, I moved to the Northern Territory to fly single-engine aircraft across some of the most remote parts of Australia.

Those early days were character building—long, hot flights in aircraft without air conditioning, manually refuelling on the tarmac—but I wouldn’t change a thing. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and gave me a deep respect for the aircraft and environment.

What do you enjoy most about being a Qantas pilot?

There’s something incredibly rewarding about knowing you've helped thousands of people get to where they need to be safely. Whether they’re heading off on holiday, travelling for work, or reconnecting with loved ones—every person on board has a story. I feel privileged to play a small part in their day.
