Women in Aviation International: Girls flying high

A group of school students in the hangar learning about aviation from industry professionals

Women in Aviation International is a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in increasing female representation in aviation and aerospace. They aim to inspire girls and women to pursue careers in aviation. On September 21, 2023, Qantas held the annual Girls in Aviation Day at Hanger 416, an initiative started by Women in Aviation International. Over 100 enthusiastic and excited young Year 6 students were welcomed to experience a day filled with all the potential opportunities aviation has to offer.

Experiencing what it is like to be alongside a Qantas A330 aircraft, the young women were able to engage with some female engineers, pilots, cabin crew, freight managers, medical professionals, airport staff, and flight operations experts. The students rotated between stations, experiencing everything from the flight deck with the pilots to the cargo hold outside with the freight team.

Some Qantas employees had the incredible opportunity to attend the event with their children, creating a special bond and memories to last a lifetime.

"Today is something you can’t teach at school. Having the opportunity to show my daughter what I wish I could have learnt at school – you can’t put a price tag on it. To give young girls the opportunity to do this is just an amazing experience."

Anna Craven, Cabin Crew Allocation Analyst

This initiative is crucial in shaping female aviation in the future and encouraging young women to believe they can do anything they put their minds to.
