The Qantas Legal team reports to the General Counsel & Group Executive, Office of the CEO and works across the Qantas Group, supporting this market leading, global organisation. The Legal Counsel is responsible for the management of legal matters across Qantas Group working for a delegated client group. Reporting into the Head of Legal, this legal role manages the provision of legal services to various business units while simultaneously assisting the Group maintain compliance and its reputation in the market. The provision of legal matters includes providing legal analysis and advice for critical projects, transactions, risks and business initiatives. In addition there is a requirement to review contracts within the Groups risk framework, while providing high quality, solution focused legal advice. 
 
The Legal Counsel will be responsible for managing and coaching other Legal Team members to grow their capability within the profession. They will work collaboratively and closely with members of OCEO and Group Legal, and their stakeholders across all levels of management across the Group. 
 
The Legal Counsel will be responsible for briefing senior executives on risks and recommendations; and maintaining effective working relationships with external lawyers, and with counterparties and business colleagues.

You’ll have –

  • A minimum of 5+ years PQE, across general corporate and commercial law disciplines, with a mix of Tier 1 law firm and large corporate in-house experience preferred 
  • Degree qualified in Law with a current Practising Certificate in New South Wales
  • Proven and successful experience in corporate / commercial disciplines, including contract drafting and negotiating, commercial advice, litigation, regulatory, privacy, intellectual property and transaction experience, managing the delivery of legal services in a fast-paced environment and familiarity with regulatory regimes 
  • Ability to provide legal advice unsupervised (within a team-oriented business
    environment) but also to co-ordinate with both in-house and external resources
  • Demonstrated experience in close working relationships with management to achieve business objectives
  • Proven experience in obtaining, understanding and interpreting legal opinions/advice 
  • The ability to understand team culture and operate in a fast-paced, collegiate
    environment and juggle competing demands 
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with Qantas Group internal stakeholders. 
  • Confident and effective interpersonal and communication skills, capable of relating well to
    people at all levels in an organisation, with high level negotiating skills and the ability to confront difficult issues.
  •  Organisational and management skills, with proven ability to manage complex and conflicting situations work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
