As the Manager, External Communication, you will protect and enhance the reputation of Jetstar through effective, strategic communications.  The primary focus is external communications through media and social media but may also include some activities that are internally focused.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage sensitive issues through effective communications strategies and tactics including drafting reactive media and social media statements and plans as well as backgrounding journalists.  
  • Work closely with business units across the organisation to identify potential and emerging media issues and prepare mitigation strategies and plans.  
  • Develop a pipeline of strategic, proactive stories to promote Jetstar’s products, people and unique place in Australian aviation and successfully pitch these opportunities to journalists.  
  • Produce materials including media releases, backgrounders, statements, briefing packs, run sheets, communications plans, key messages, Q&A’s and speaking notes for executives and other spokespeople. 
  • Act in a key communications role during a crisis. Involves working closely with Group Communications team to manage the impact on Jetstar’s brand and reputation. 
  • Develop external communications strategies and materials for projects and priorities across the business, in line with Jetstar’s strategy, working closely with project stakeholders. 
  • Work with business units to find, develop and deliver new proactive story opportunities for media and social media platforms.  
  • Deliver strategy and plans for day-to-day external business announcements and successfully pitch these positive stories to journalists. 

You’ll Have:

  • Tertiary Qualification in Communications or Marketing preferred.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in corporate communications roles.  
  • Experience in media and social media management in a high-pressure environment. 
  • Exposure to issues rich and high-profile environments. 
  • Experience in managing sensitive issues and working closely with executive teams, including developing briefing materials. 
  • Experience developing communications to reach broad and diverse audiences 
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams (marketing, PR, internal and external corporate communication.
  • Exposure to highly regulated industries. 
  • Event management experience (both for media and stakeholder events). 
  • Experience in mentoring junior members of a team.
  • Outstanding communications skills both verbal and written. 
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and to meet strict deadlines with a range of internal/external stakeholders.  
  • Flexibility and “Customer Service” orientation. 
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical ability and problem-solving orientation.
